4. Organize Coherently

A solid essay has a clear path, so try to be mindful of each section.

Here’s the simple structure of an essay:

  1. Introduction
  2. Body
  3. Conclusion

Your intro should tell readers what’s coming, your body paragraphs should support your main idea, and your conclusion should tie it all together without repeating everything word-for-word.

Tip: Each section should flow naturally into the next, so keep in mind that if you’re jumping around too much, something’s off.

5. Always Cite Sources

No, you can’t skip citations even if your essay isn’t for a research class.

When you use someone else’s words, ideas, or data, you need to give credit. That’s just basic integrity, and neglecting to do that can lead to unwanted accusations of plagiarism.

  • Make sure the name and year match in both places
  • Italicize titles of books and journals

Using words that are specific to your topic demonstrates a thorough understanding of it.

  • Use an unexpected statement

11. Give Context / Background Information

Readers can’t magically tell what’s on your mind. So, before you make your main argument, give them just enough info to get what’s going on. That might mean:

  • Defining a key term
  • Setting up a conflict or debate
  • Giving a quick historical background

But here’s the key: don’t overload this part. To keep your reader interested, this needs to be short and precise.
