Every AI essay generator out there promises the same things: that it’s the best, the fastest, the most human-like, and that it can save your GPA.
But with so many free tools available, it’s hard to tell which ones are helpful and which ones are just another shortcut that will make you work even harder to achieve something worth delivering.
So, I decided to try 6 of the most popular free AI essay generators, asking them to provide an output based on the same prompt: an academic-style essay about “The Role of Symbolism in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.”
Then, I reviewed each one based on the experience and the final result, looking at things like writing style, structure, whether it’s suitable for academic work, and even potential plagiarism coincidences.
Here are my honest reviews so you can skip the trial-and-error and get straight to writing.
Grammarly’s Free AI Writer

This tool works in a simple step-by-step process. First, you choose the type of content you want. Then, you can enter your main topic and key points, and if you want, you can also pick a tone for the writing. It’s pretty straightforward and doesn’t require you to sign up.
The first time I tested it with a detailed prompt, it took several minutes to generate an output. Just to put that in perspective, while we finished the entire review for MyEssayWriter.AI, Grammarly’s AI writer was still processing the same request. We had to refresh the page and try again.
I gave it a second shot with just the essay title. This time, it delivered results in seconds.
Here’s what I got:
- A 500-word essay with solid structure.
- Clear explanation of the topic.
- Proper grammar and an academic tone.
But a few things stood out:
- It had that “AI feel.” Some of the transitions and phrases were too generic or repetitive.
- It didn’t include in-text citations or references
- You can’t really guide it beyond the basic input, which limits how tailored the output can be
- The text didn’t raise any plagiarism red flags, which is good!
MyEssayWriter.AI

This one has a simple interface that allows you to enter the essay topic, choose the academic level (college, Master’s, or Doctoral), and pick the type of essay you need.
The first output was ready in just a few seconds. It gave me around 400 words with a very basic tone and a repetitive structure. (I selected “college – undergraduate” for the test.) Nothing wrong grammatically, but it felt a little surface-level and had that AI-generated vibe.
Once the first draft loads, the system lets you add more instructions, like how long you want the essay to be or what extra points to include. With that, the output improved a lot. The second version was closer to 800 words, went more in-depth, and matched the tone I asked for. Still not perfect, but a step up.
But there’s a problem with it: you can’t download or copy the essay at all unless you sign up for a free trial that only covers 1500 words. After that, you need to pay the subscription.
Also, something to keep in mind:
- The tool didn’t include citations or references.
- I couldn’t check for plagiarism since you can’t copy the text from the page.
MyEssayWriter.AI has potential, especially once you give it a second round of input. But the fact that you can’t even copy the text without signing up kind of defeats the purpose of a “free” AI tool. If you’re in a hurry and don’t want to deal with subscriptions, this one probably isn’t worth your time.
PerfectEssayWriter.AI

Website: www.perfectessaywriter.ai
This tool keeps it really simple and only asks you to enter your essay topic. It doesn’t allow you to enter detailed prompts, tone preferences, or structure requests.
As a result, I got A short 280-word essay with a basic structure of 1 paragraph for the introduction, 2 for the body, and 1 for the conclusion.
It’s definitely simple but not bad. The grammar was perfect, and the tone was clean and neutral. It was nothing fancy, but it was still appropriate for a school assignment.
Here’s what stood out:
- It’s 100% free, no sign-up required.
- A built-in text editor is available so you can tweak your essay right on the page.
- No noticeable plagiarism issues.
- But, you can’t add any custom instructions about tone, style, or structure.
PerfectEssayWriter.AI is basic but gets the job done, especially if you’re in a hurry and just need a starting point. It won’t blow you away, and I wouldn’t use it for anything advanced or academic work.
But for quick help with general topics at a high school or early college level, it’s a solid option. It’d be way more useful if it let you customize tone and style.
Undetectable AI’s Free AI Essay Writer

This one stands out right from the start. It gives you a big text box where you can input your topic and all the details you want the essay to include. You also get to choose the length, academic level, and essay type. There’s even an option to include references.
The output was very fast. I got a 515-word essay in just a few seconds.
Here’s what impressed me:
- The analysis was on point. It covered major symbols in the play and even included citations to support the points.
- It linked to reliable sources, something none of the other tools did.
- The grammar was perfect, and the tone felt natural and academic.
- No plagiarism issues showed up.
- The content felt like something a real student might write, which is a big win.
The only limit of the free version is that the essays don’t go much beyond 600 words. But you can generate multiple essays per day without needing to sign up.
So far, this is the best tool I’ve tested. It’s flexible, accurate, and the output feels way more polished than most free options out there. You can give it a detailed prompt or just the topic, and it delivers a strong starting point for any essay. If you’re looking for something reliable and free, this one’s a safe bet.
The Good AI’s Essay Writer

Website: www.the-good-ai.com
The Good AI’s Essay Writer gives you two options to start: Essay Writer and Essay Outliner. I went with the Essay Writer for this test.
You begin by entering a prompt; the platform advises you to include enough details to generate a solid essay.
After that, you can choose the length of the essay, select the essay style, decide whether you want references included, and pick the reference format you need (APA, MLA, etc).
One amazing feature is that you can upload a piece of your own so the tool can mimic your writing style. If you skip that, it uses a standard academic tone by default.
The output was generated in seconds, but here’s the catch: you only get to see the first half of the essay unless you pay for a subscription.
Still, that first half was genuinely impressive:
- Great grammar.
- Natural tone.
- Clear, structured analysis.
- Even included personal insights and reflections.
- It didn’t scream “AI” the way some others do.
The Good AI’s Essay Writer is a smart, well-designed tool for more advanced writing. The big downside is that it isn’t fully free. You’ll only get a sneak peek of your essay unless you pay. Even so, the half you can access is strong enough to help you get started with a clear structure and tone. Use it as a guide, and you’ll still save yourself a lot of time.
College Essay’s AI Essay Writer

This one is similar to some of the above, It starts by asking you to enter the essay topic. It gives you the option to include citations and the number of sources you need.
After the first draft is generated, you can refine your input by adding the academic level, length, and a more complete prompt.
Unfortunately, the result I got was completely off. Instead of writing about the symbolism in Macbeth like I asked, the tool spent most of the essay explaining what symbolism is in general and why it’s important in literature. There is barely any actual analysis of the play.
What’s worse is that the tool only shows you half of the essay unless you pay, and it only allows you to generate one draft.
The interface is clean and easy to use, and it offers helpful customization options, but the tool isn’t free, and the output is not great at all. If you’re serious about turning in a decent essay, I’d skip this one; there are better options on this list.
Write With ChatGPT
Each of the AI essay writers reviewed above has their strengths and weaknesses. But if none of these tools meet your expectations or you’d rather have more control over your writing while upholding academic integrity, consider using ChatGPT or Claude. They give you the flexibility to guide the content step by step, helping you create original work that reflects your voice and understanding.
