Keep Chekhov’s Gun Locked and Loaded with ChatGPT

“Chekhov’s Gun” can be a great addition to many literary pieces. But what if you introduce too much too fast, or the payoff isn’t what you wanted it to be? This “misfire” is, unfortunately, a common occurrence for many writers. Luckily, ChatGPT can help you avoid this.

What Is the Principle of Chekhov’s Gun?

The whole concept of Chekhov’s Gun is pretty simple: you have a seemingly insignificant item that is later revealed to be an essential part of the story.

Chekhov’s gun isn’t new; this plot device has been around since the 1880s. And the person behind it is author and Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. He used the example of a gun because of the expectation that comes along with it and its promise to go off.

It is not a literal gun, by the way!

Let’s say you are reading a book. In the first chapter, the protagonist is writing a journal. You don’t give this much thought, but later on (perhaps in the third chapter), when this character runs away later in the story, the journal explains everything. This is an example of “Chekhov’s gun.”

Examples of Chekhov’s Gun In Literature

The Hobbit

  • Gun introduced: Bard learns about the weak spot in Smaug’s underbelly.
  • Gun loaded: Bard prepares to defend the city when Smaug attacks Lake-town.
  • Gun fired: Bard uses this knowledge to shoot an arrow into Smaug’s weak spot, ultimately killing him.

The Odyssey

  • Gun introduced: Odysseus is renowned for his ability to string his great bow.
  • Gun loaded: Penelope declares that she will marry whoever can both string the bow and shoot an arrow through a series of axe heads.
  • Gun fired: Disguised as a beggar, Odysseus strings his bow, wins the contest, and then eliminates the suitors.

Of Mice and Men

  • Gun introduced: A gun is mentioned when Carlson uses it to euthanize Candy’s old dog.
  • Gun loaded: The gun remains significant in the narrative and is later in George’s possession.
  • Gun fired: George ultimately uses the gun to kill Lennie

The Hunger Games

  • Gun introduced: Katniss notices a cluster of poisonous berries.
  • Gun loaded: The berries later become a critical element when the rules force Katniss and Peeta into a life-or-death dilemma—an act of defiance against the Capitol’s control.
  • Gun fired: The threat posed by the berries ultimately compels the Capitol to allow both contestants to survive, transforming the berries into a symbol of resistance.

Why Does Chekhov’s Gun Work In Writing?

Chekhov’s gun is appealing to readers because it makes even the most minor details of a story essential to the overall narrative. By adding or including Chekhov’s gun to your own stories, you can:

  • Make sure irrelevant items are taken out of the story
  • Improve character development
  • Create a better-connected narrative since the story elements have more significance
  • Increase anticipation and tension in the story
  • Add to the reader’s satisfaction once they’ve finished reading

Plus, when the “gun” is fired, readers might have an “aha” moment if they anticipated it had greater significance all along. For others, the moment could make them rethink the story with new eyes.

No More Misfires With ChatGPT

Keeping track of every loaded gun in your story can be overwhelming, and we’re pretty sure that you have forgotten which ones need to be ‘fired.’

So, instead of having ‘misfires’ left and right, you can use ChatGPT. Here’s how:

Step 1. Identify Every Loaded Gun

Once your story is written, feed it into ChatGPT and ask it to identify all the loaded guns. ChatGPT can detect objects, character skills, traits, dialogue, and other elements that might have hidden significance. Use its feedback to ensure you’ve set up your loaded guns effectively.

Using Chekhov's gun principle, please identify and list every loaded gun in my story.

You can also use ChatGPT to uncover new potential loaded guns:

Tip: Loaded guns shouldn’t be so obvious that they become mere foreshadowing.

Step 2. Loaded Gun Analysis

Once you have a list of all the loaded guns in your story, ask ChatGPT to run an analysis on each one. This analysis can examine early introductions, potential contradictions, hidden clues, instances of accidental foreshadowing, recurring themes, and overall relevance—helping ensure that each gun is set up for the intended payoff.

ChatGPT might even suggest subtler ways to reference these elements throughout your story, ensuring the eventual payoff doesn’t feel forced.

Step 3. Payoff Analysis

If your loaded guns are on track this far, now all you have to worry about is the payoff itself. In other words, you need to make sure that your loaded guns have fired and added significance to the story.

You can have ChatGPT analyze your payoff to make sure that the timing makes sense. It should never feel forced or rushed when the gun finally fires.

ChatGPT can also check the impact of your payoff, making sure it evokes the intended reaction from the reader.

Step 4. Fix Misfires

Now that you have a list of accidental misfires, the final step is fixing them.

Ask ChatGPT follow-up questions to pinpoint the root cause of these misfires and request suggestions for crafting scenarios that build a more satisfying payoff.

Locked and Loaded

Chekhov’s Gun can add significant depth to any story. However, if not handled carefully, it can also result in misfires and disappointing payoffs!  With ChatGPT, you can ensure that every loaded gun is primed and ready to fire.
